The Genetics Lab is the area inside the Laboratory of Genetics and Molecular Cardiology held responsible for the initial processing of samples acquired in studies with human subjects. First, samples (i.e. hole venous blood, saliva, buccal swabs, and/or FTA dried blood drops) are required to meet quality control standards related to collection and transport. Only then, nucleic acid extraction can initiate. Currently, the Genetics Lab uses commercial DNA extraction kits with silica spin column filter to yeld high-quality DNA.

Following extraction, another quality control is necessary to verify DNA integrity, quality, and quantitation, these parameters are conferred by nanospectrophotometry and agarose gel electrophoresis. After meeting the criteria for downstream applications, DNA samples are stored in a temperature-controlled biorepository.
